From the FAQ section The Master & the Letters
Two things decide it. The first is how complete the reporting pack is, and the second is how busy that particular Master's office is. A complete pack at a quieter office can be a matter of weeks. An incomplete pack, or a backlogged office, can take months. Completeness is the one factor within your control.
Nothing moves until the Letters are issued. Banks will not engage properly without them, property cannot be dealt with, and the estate stands still.
What actually drives the timeline:
- A complete pack beats everything. One missing or incorrectly certified document sends the pack back. When you correct it and resubmit, it goes to the back of the queue. Most stories about a slow Master are really stories about a pack that went in incomplete.
- Offices differ. Each Master’s office has its own workload, and offices go through better and worse periods. Where there is a known disruption, such as an office relocation, we say so in our news section.
- Small things get packs rejected. How the supporting documents are certified, how the forms are dated, what proof of address is required. Mundane details cause most rejections, not dramatic legal problems.
A rejection rarely arrives as a phone call explaining what is wrong. It arrives as nothing, for weeks, and then a query note. Which is why the pack going in right the first time is worth more than any amount of following up afterwards.
